Scarecrow Festival

pumpkinsandstrawbales

Each and every autumn, when the frost is on the punkin, the scarecrows come out in force!  For the first two weeks in October they line up along the Stevensville cutoff and strut their stuff.  This year my sister and I decided to drive over and check it out.  Here are a few displays.  I admire the work and imagination that went into these.

bookscarecrow

Even without the sign one might have guessed the library set up this one.  They drew the face on two pages of an open book, but the breeze messed them up.

breastcancerawareness

This elegant lady looks a bit out of place between these two characters.  However, ’tis the season of the witch and nothing is as it seems!

doubleburger

Talk about a Big Mac attack!  This looks more like the Attack of the Big Macs!

fishermanbesidefireplace

This proud fisherman’s got the fire stoked and ready to fry up that big beautiful rainbow trout.

headlesshorseman

This Headless Horseman is long on horsepower.  The dog looks about to do what dogs do.

Every gal needs her beauty sleep!

loungingscarecrow

Your typical lounger.  He does look relaxed!

rollerbladeronbackside

Can’t tell whether this rollerblader decided to take five or wiped out.

robocrow

A lot of old towers went into this Cyberspace Cadet!

onthepot

Latrina McCoy is either taking a break or making fresh POT pies.  Judging from the look on her face, things aren’t coming out right.  (Don’t worry, Latrina, this too shall pass!)

flagger

From a distance this guy looked pretty lifelike, even slowing a few cars before they realized it was just a scarecrow.

Kudos to everyone who set these up!

Sculptures of Bygone Days

In Darby, Montana stands a store the length of a city block that offers everything from candy to clothing to antiques to these beautiful sculptures.  I love how the artist molded such fine detail into the metal.

One T-Rex took a tumble.

You can’t miss the place; it’s right along the main drag and well worth checking out!

Wikiup

Here’s a scene right out of a fairy tale, complete with the rustic dwelling of a forest gnome.  Actually, it’s a wikiup someone built around a tree in the Sapphire Mountains.  I had never seen one before so I went over for a closer look.

WikiupInside

At first I thought the opening too small to get through, but I got in with no trouble.  And the interior afforded enough space for two people to lie down in.  Not my idea of a Motel 6, but I’ll bet it beats sleeping outside in the rain!  Overall, very neat!

Photo Fun: Douglas Fir with a Tutu

IMG_5009 SapphireDougFirTutu 06_05

We chanced upon this odd-looking fellow on a recent trek in the Sapphire Mountains: a stately Douglas fir sporting a ruffled skirt.  At first we thought it was mistletoe, but a closer inspection revealed a low cluster of branches.

Sweet Company

IMG_5031

When you live in Montana, wildlife–especially deer–just comes with the territory.  These characters were part of a herd of eight that made the rounds in our neighborhood yesterday, staying anywhere from twenty minutes to an hour in each yard before moving on to the next.  Five of them checked out my soon-to-be rock garden while the other three lazed under the aspens along my fence.  They seemed almost tame, simply watching as I went about my business.  After about forty minutes they meandered to my south fence, which they effortlessly jumped, and moseyed into a neighboring field.
